The Sage of Aipaea by seancruz The Sage of Aipaea by seancruz
The Sage of Aipaea

pronounciation: ah-ee-pay-ah
(Supposed to be a weird Greek name :XD: )

Dedicated to my grandfather who died in 1996; he loved astronomy and its many mysteries.

Artwork has been edited.

Aipaea, a strange and colorful star system, contains a most unusual giant marked as the Sage. It has no ring, but circling it are 2 sister comets. No one knows how such a giant can execute such radical cloud patterns in its violent equator. Among its few moons, humans have colonized and mined their rich deposits. Aipaea the star is the most unusual star discovered; it glows an eerie green caused by a sphere of neon gases around the star.

Ahh I really really like this picture, I just get disappointed when I see something wrong with the picture and everything else is done really good, what I mean is the smaller planet or the moon however you want to call it, it looks way too smooth and clean, sorry :D

Great scene, plenty of detail and interesting colours/forms makes this quite unique. Only I really dislike the dA copyright marker, since they get in the way to me, and the gas planet (whilst looking nice) doesn't entirely look 3d. ;p

I usually find that unless you have a million pageviews, your work only circulates the internet in non-commercial forms - free wallpaper sites (though the advertisements bring them revenue), and various petty dA users who soon get banned.

True. I've been thinking lately of just adding a small custom watermark instead of DA's since it's ugly as hell:XD:

Haha yeah, a small watermark is superior for the sheer uninterrupted aesthetics of your artwork really ;p, the dA one really obscures some of the potential greatness in a piece I find. Whilst easier to circumvent, one still has to go to the trouble of bothering to remove your watermark in the first place if they're that intent. Not to mention posting on dA isn't far different from your artworks appearing on wallpaper sites in terms of revenue; the more views your art gets, the more potential advertising clicks dA also gets - just like on a wallpaper site.

Wow, that can't be common that their star is shrouded by neon gases...that's a very cool explanation for the green overtone. And man, the center stripe of that gas giant at first looked like it was just too dark, but after looking at it for a little while, it just sucks you in, like it has a gravity of its own! I love this picture!! *thumbs up*

Oh hell yeh! Dude this is sweet.... The ship looks good to me, I\'ve been wanting to add one to my pieces but I\'m afraid to....... the texture on the close planet is ace, as is your damn gas giant! Always love those... If I were to have done this piece the only thing I probably would change is the shaddow opacity on the gg.. just dosent look right to me.. no matter this is a solid piece!

awesome :) I especially like the extra ordinary colors u used here... makes it a really unique piece.
You should remove the comets though :P I kinda don\'t like them at all. Maybe you should change the color of some of those blue stars as well. Blue doesn\'t match with the other colors here :/
Other than that it\'s great as usual. :)

Thanks! I've been aiming to make a slimy piece since forever, but nobody liked the color for the collabs I was working on lol

I might make the comets smaller and like several ppl pointed out, it needs to be modified. Maybe it'll look better then :XD:

The detail is great. ^^
What did you use to create the ships, did you just draw it? :)

I used the demo of Cinema 4D and painted over the 3d model in photoshop.
So, in a way, it was drawn because I use the model as a base.

btw if u use the demo u must take a screenshot of your monitor to get the 3d model(s) since it wont let you save or render it. :(

comet tails should be directed exactly away from the star, rotate it by 15 degrees clockwise and everything will be fine :)

the shadow on the gas giant isn't quite correct - terminator line should connect the two poles of planet.

I love the starships and moon landscape. Color scheme is also great, brown/red/orange and blue ones are boring :D

And the last thing - dA watermark :) In fact I haven't noticed it :D It appeared to me when I looked at the picture again after few minutes.

Good job.

The equator is supposed to be slanted forward, but I now see that the shadow is less than half the planet! Thanks for pointing that out mate!

I dont think im going to take the da watermark off lol my dad has been scaring me for the past months about people stealing my work and making money off of it :upset:

no problem and yeah, art stealing sucks. I know two ways of preventing it - low resolution and quality images or watermarks - I prefer watermarks than shitty previews when you cannot see any details.
